Tennessee

So we battled a snowstorm to get to Tennessee yesterday. (Thanks Dad for helping with the move!) Of course it snowed in Tennessee. It only does maybe once a year. And I moved in it. What would be inconvenient in St. Louis was apocalyptic in Tennessee; people seemed to forget to know how to drive and the roads weren't that great either. But now I am at home in Tennessee and here til Thursday morning. Still have to buy (Mexican) car insurance, see if I can get a Tennessee title and license for the truck before I get out of here and generally pack for this trip.

Thursday: travel to Montgomery, stay with Kristin and Daniel. That's next on the itinerary.

Bon voyage

I was really happy that everyone came out last night to say 'adios.' I don't feel great today, but it was worth it. Only five days until I leave St. Louis.

Crossing the border - the Plan

I had already decided to cross at Colombia in Nuevo Leon versus the Nuevo Laredo in Tamaulipas/Laredo, TX border crossing when Fernando told me I HAD to buy my pass prior to crossing at Colombia because there's no one to pay at the border there. I went to https://www.gotxtag.com to buy a 20 dollar permit to cross. Even though crossing only costs $3 per the website, I'm willing to guess the 20 dollar fee will be well worth not having to cross at Nuevo Laredo. That is, if it arrives in the mail before I leave.

I also canceled my cell phone today; it's good through the 14th of February. Tomorrow the car goes into the shop to make sure it is internationally road ready as well as the appointment with the landlord to (hopefully) have my deposit for the apartment returned to me. I need that money.

Side note - you can use http://maps.live.com to map Mexican cites or routes.

Milestones

Today is the last day at Big Brothers Big Sisters. Then, two weeks from today I'll be hauling what's left of my belongings after I sell as much "big stuff" as I can to Tennessee. Then in not-quite three weeks, my road trip to Guadalajara begins, with Leo along for the ride.

I decided, after being asked if I was going to do so, to keep a blog on my time to, in and from Mexico. This is mostly for posterity, but also in case anyone's interested in keeping up with me. I doubt life will be terribly more exciting than it is now, but it will at least be warmer.

As the trip begins, I hope to start posting pictures as well. I'm bringing the netbook to Mexico, but I'll have to search for wi-fi hot spots wherever I'm at. Hopefully I can keep this up to date and interesting enough to sit down and read.

I think when I wake up tomorrow, unemployed, the trip will seem much more real. As of now, however, sitting at my desk at work, it feels like another Friday at the office. Stay tuned.
